I have always wanted to get seat sacks for my classroom, but they are pretty pricey and I don't like the colors that are available commercially. I borrowed a seat sack from a colleague to see how difficult it would be to make.
This is what it looked like and I wanted them to fit my 12" chairs that I have in my classroom.
Simple enough. Pocket in front and pocket in back to hang.
(These are available on Amazon, just click the picture)
So I headed out to the ONE fabric store we have on island hoping to find some Duck Cloth.
Score!!! I found all of the colors I wanted and bought a yard of each.
The pink, yellow and green were a poly/cotton blend and only cost $6 a yard.
The blue and purple were duck cloth and cost $9 a yard.
The cloth was 58" across so I was able to cut out 4 pieces from a yard - 14"x36".
I sewed up the edges on opposite sides.
Then I measured 6" for the pocket that connects to the chair.
(That was what the seat sack I borrowed measured)
I pinned it and then I pinned the book pocket up to meet it on the opposite side,
but I did not overlap them.
Then I sewed right up both sides.
Turn it inside out and you are done!
I had a workshop at school so I took one with me to see how it would fit on my chairs.
They look awesome!!
I was able to make 4 from one yard of material.
That comes out to $2.25 a sack for the duck cloth!
The others were only $1.50 each. I'm calling this a win :)
I can't wait to see how they all look when I head back to the classroom.
(Well I think I can wait, I'm not quite ready to go back yet!)
What crafty things have you been up to?
Head over and link up with Tara or just check out the other awesome craftiness.
These turned out great and will add a great splash of color to your classroom! My husband is the sewer at our house. He made mine from a heavy fabric like duck cloth and they literally last years, and you can't beat the much cheaper price! :)

That's awesome Tonya! My dad used to sew and reupholster things for my mom. It's rare to hear about men sewing still.
DeleteI love these seat sacks! They are colorful and look like they hold a lot! There are so many times I look at things and say "Wait, I can make that myself"! Great job!
ReplyDeleteMahalo!
DeleteLove these!!!! Yay you!! Super win!!! Thanks for linking them up:)

Thanks so much for your awesome linky Tara! It always motivates me to be more crafty!
DeleteAmazing!! Great job on these! These look awesome!! I bet they will look awesome in your classroom!!! Also, I am super jealous you LIVE in Hawaii!! My husband and I went on our honeymoon to Maui and Kauai, and I WAS IN LOVE!!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! Maui and Kauai are two of my favorite islands!!
DeleteThat is great! I wish I could do that!
ReplyDeleteAbout 7 years ago I had a parent make these for my entire class! They came in such handy! They held up for a long time too. I don't have any of them now, because six years would really be pushing it with 7-8 year olds :)!! If I had the patience to sew, I could have probably fixed or replace them along the way. You will love having these in your room.

These are GREAT! :) Did you use a denim needle or just a regular sewing needle?
ReplyDeleteBritta I just used a regular needle. The material is sturdy, but not as rigid as denim.
DeleteThose look AMAZING! I can't believe how much cheaper it was to make them too. I'm definitely pinning this for later. Thanks for sharing!

I would recommend sewing again after you turn them the right way round. This double seam adds strength, they take a lot of weight with the books and a lot of stress with being pulled and pushed at.
ReplyDeleteBut I agree, such a simple thing to make and much cheaper if you have time! :)
Thanks for the tip Helen! I will try that :)
DeleteDid you wash the fabric before you did the sewing? I bought my duck cloth and I'm ready to get started. They look awesome! :)
ReplyDeleteHi! I love these! Did you wash your duck cloth before you did the sewing? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteBeth
Yes, I did wash the fabric before I started :)
DeleteChanging schools and grade levels . . . this will be perfect . . . but, I don't sew . . . hope I can find someone with a sewing machine . . . mahalo for the step-by-step directions.
ReplyDeleteCould I use old t-shirts for this?? I have a ton and I don't know what to do with them!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I am off to try that now!
DeleteHi, I was wondering how wide the back of the chairs are? I want to make sure I have the right measurements for upper elementary chairs rather than the smaller lower el chairs!
ReplyDeleteThey are 12 inches across.
